Though some reductions in the spread of infection have been noted, life-threatening surgical site infections occur with frequency and present a problem that could be prevented with improved pre-surgical
nursing care. About 1.5 million people develop infections each year that result from exposure to microbial agents in the healthcare environment (Carling et al, 2005). The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) maintained that approximately 2 million patients contract infections in healthcare settings, and of that number, about 90,000-100,000 patients die from these infections (Houghton, 2006). Regardless
of the type or purpose of surgery, surgical site infections can present challenges to the recovery of the patient. Surgical site infections are especially problematic because they can result
in life-threatening illnesses and can increase the amount of time individuals spend in the hospital after surgery, as well increase the level and duration of treatment (Houghton, 2006). Research
indicate that nursing staff play a major role in introducing protocols, supporting patient participation and educating patients and family members in protocols to prevent the spread of HAIs (Jakobsson, Perlkvist
& Wann-Hansson, 2010). The use of evidence-based best practice protocols introduced preoperatively by nursing staff can help to reduce the spread of infection to surgical wounds. The target
population for a prevention plan includes individuals utilizing elective or non-emergent surgical services, including ambulatory surgeries as well as surgeries that occur following hospital admission. The target setting for
this type of protocol includes both hospitals and surgical centers and will focus on the role of nurses as both educators and direct care providers.
