Authors begin by providing a section on the foundations of counseling, which includes a look at marriage and family life. Then, the counseling process is explored in what one might
call the meat of the book. Authors here explore goals of counseling and pay special attention to first family issues. Then, they go on to provide a look at special
circumstances such as step parenting, remarriage and unique situations. The book again provides an overview of material on the counseling process but it lacks in terms of depth. This work
at only about 200 pages covers a wide array of topics in the family counseling field, and only touches on situations that have become commonplace today. The book begins by
providing developments in the field and relays the fact that there are more and more couples marrying who have previously wed than ever before. The point, as the authors explain,
is that when a couple gets married, or seeks counseling, they are not necessarily coming from a first marriage perspective. This is an important point and it does appear that
it makes a tremendous difference in regard to counseling. After all, when someone is remarried, the problems are often much more complicated than in a first marriage. This is especially
true if children are involved. Couples who have blended families are much more likely to have complicated problems. This is because the children are often on visitation schedules, and courtroom
dramas inevitably surface. Counseling is usually sought due to stress, and remarriages are very often more stressful. Of course, in the case where someone marries young and leaves the union
early, this factor will not be present. Yet, the point authors suggest seems to indicate that in fact, life for people today due to these trends is much more complex
