Prejeans ministry draws not only on scripture and the words of Jesus Christ, but also on her own personal perspective of the Divine. At one point in her account, Prejean justifies her actions and relationship to the warden regarding Patrick Somnier, another convict executed for his heinous crime. What Prejean says in regards to Somnier also applies to Willie. She writes, "I tell him that, yes, I cared for Patrick Somnier. Despite his terrible crime, he was a human being and deserved to be treated with dignity and, yes, I was emotionally distraught watching him die" (Prejean 122). Rather than allow herself to be put on the defensive, Prejean than asks how the warden, "a minister in your church, a man who professes to follow the way of life that Jesus taught," could possibly be associated with the implementation of a death sentence (Prejean 122). As this indicates, Prejean founds her relationship with death row inmates, such as Willie, directly on the injunctions of Christ; however, it is also clear that she has a personal interpretation of the Bible. To those who justify retribution as having the "blessing of God" due to biblical passages describing how divine vengeance was "meted out to guilty and innocent alike" in "the Great Flood, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, (and) the slaying of the firstborn sons of the Egyptians," Prejean offers the observation that these "so-called acts of God" can only be interpreted by human beings (Prejean 123). In other words, biblical accounts interpret these events through human perception. She goes on to state that she "cant accept that God has fits of rage and goes about trucking in retaliation" (Prejean 123). ...
