paper properly! From the time of the Reformation, when scholars first began to read the Bible for themselves in the vernacular, there has been a great deal of debate
relative to the message of Paul in Romans, chapters 9 through 11. It is in these chapters that Paul lays out the doctrine of predestination and the election of the
chosen for salvation. The basic concept encapsulated in these verses is that salvation comes to humanity via Gods grace?since no man is deserving of salvation, God, completely through his infinite
mercy, grants salvation to those who accept the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. In other words, it is by Gods grace that salvation comes, and not though the works of
man?it is faith that matters and not acts. Paul writes, "But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no
longer be grace" (Romans 11:6). What Paul appears to be saying is that if the actions of humanity had anything to do with salvation, then it would not be by
grace that we are saved. On this point, scripture is clear?that is, it is the grace of God which is the only factor in the process of humanitys redemption.
Since God is omnipotent, he knows even before an individual exists whether or not that person will be saved?that is, whether or not the individual is "predestined" for heaven. This
has caused many to reject the doctrine of predestination because, on the surface, it appears to deny humanity the freedom to choose salvation. Some scholars throughout the centuries have argued
