by K. Von Huben 4/2010 Please Introduction The film Precious is extremely difficult to watch, but for those who can stand
it, the message is uplifting: every single human being is precious, even those who are oppressed and victimized. This paper discusses the film and the way in which Precious overcame
her difficulties. It is a story of great courage and determination and although it doesnt have a typical Hollywood happy ending, there is hope that Precious will resolve some of
her problems and her life will go on and in a more positive direction than ever before. Discussion The film is based on the book Push, by Sapphire The language
of the novel on which the film is based is direct and obscene and because of Preciouss odd way of speaking, difficult for readers at least at the beginning. Her
subject matter is also hard to acknowledge, for readers who still wish that 16-year olds retained some sort of innocence, its hard to deal with a protagonist whose opening sentences
are these: "I was left back when I was twelve because I had a baby for my fahver. That was in 1983. I was out of school for a year.
This gonna be my second baby" (Sapphire p. 3). A few page later the reader finds out that the girl is 16 and is going to be expelled from school
because shes pregnant (Sapphire). Its difficult to sympathize with her because her language is so repellant; she uses "mutherfucker" like some people say "hello"; she calls her teacher a "peckerwood";
