to write something similar to the following example. One aspect of my preceptors practice behavior that has struck me as particularly beneficial to patients is her focus on pain
management. When I expressed the opinion that a certain type of injury was not particularly painful, Mary stressed that pain is a subjective experience, which only the patient can interpret.
She said, "What might not be considered painful to one person, might be experienced as excruciating painful to the next. Its our
job to relieve it." She also stressed that pain has "emotional, cognitive, behavioral and cultural components," which can all affect the patient and the healing process (Sherman, et al, 2004,
p. 107). Pain is "whatever the person says it is, and experienced whenever he or she is experiencing it" (Sherman, et al, 2004, p. 107). In particular, I was impressed
with how Mary handled pain assessment with a child who had undergone surgery. Angela, a six-year-old, just hugged her stuffed elephant to her chest and looked totally miserable, refusing
to answer Mary or look at her. Mary continued to talk soothingly, rubbing Angelas back lightly as she did so. She talked about how she knew that Angela must miss
her parents, but she was sure that would come to the hospitals as soon as they were off work. She also said that Angela did not have to talk if
she did not want to, but would she point to the face that best fit how she was feeling and she showed Angela the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale.
