One group believes the war was unavoidable due to the number of issues and conflicting interests between the states in the 1850s. Another group believes the war never should have happened, the issues could have and should have been resolved by the political leaders of the day. Encyclopedia, 2001). Historians and experts also disagree as to the real cause of the war. Was it due to slavery? Or, was it the result of divided interests and
the doctrine of states rights versus federal laws. The North and the South were divided on these issues (Hutchinson Family Encyclopedia, 2001). There were a number of controversial
issues in America in the 1850s, prior to the Civil War. Economic developments in the United States The states in the South depended on slavery for their economy. Agriculture, the
major industry in the South depended on the free labor of slaves to operate. Northerners were not so opposed to the slavery being practiced in the South as they were
to expanding slavery to other territories. Some historians believe that Northerners did not want to compete against the slave labor. The primary debate regarding the issue of slavery focused on
its expansion into territories in the West that had been acquired during the Mexican War (Hughes, 2001; Hutchinson Family Encyclopedia, 2001). The North and the South had
become separated by economics and ideology. They had, in fact, become very separate regions. The North had become an industrialized society while the South had remained agricultural. The government derived
its income from tariffs, which had been set at high rates to protect the countrys products from foreign competition. Territories in the West, and particularly, the Northwest Territory was so
far from the markets that they needed federal support to build roads and so on. They, therefore, supported the high tariffs because it was this revenue that would build the
