written form, the pre-algebra concept of determining an unknown; (3) state orally or in written form the meaning of an equation; and (4) be able to work in cooperative groups
to solve algebraic equations (Cullipher). The lessons begins with the teacher asking students to define what they believe algebra to be and whether or not they consider it to
be important (Cullipher). Then, the teacher uses the Borenson materials to demonstrate these materials and model how to solve an equation. The teacher than progressively works through concepts, demonstrating on
the chalkboard or on an overhead projector how the students should record their work (Cullipher). The students are then assigned to small cooperative groups of three and materials are distributed
(a balance mat, pawns and cubes from the Borenson materials). The teacher explains the assignment and explains the roles assigned to each student. The teacher also explains what he/she will
be looking in terms of cooperative skills, understanding of concepts, etc. (Cullipher). At this time, grading of the group assignment (that is, all students within a group receive the same
score) is also explained. After the students spend roughly 20 to 30 minutes "manipulating, recording and checking their problems," the teacher collects the papers and then conducts a "low-anxiety
class discussion" pertaining to the lesson and the use of materials (Cullipher). The purpose of this discussion is to encourage the students to interact with each other, and, thereby become
more aware of the algebraic concepts used in the lesson plan. The lessons includes with the students eitehr writing or relating orally what they now believe a equation to be,
as well as what is an unknown and what other algebraic expressions mean (Cullipher). The "Planning Pyramid" approach can provide a framework for mathematics instruction that teachers can utilize
