but something that goes against the precepts that the United States of America is based upon. After all, the nation was founded on a concept of religious tolerance. The colonists
wanted to get away from Europe where the fighting over beliefs had persisted for centuries. In America, there could be tolerance and freedom. At the same time, one must
not lose sight of the fact that if everyone believes that their own religion is truth, that they must see it as something that supersedes mans rule and something that
is more important than even the dictums of the United States. In order to proliferate their religion as they see fit, some members of religious groups have challenged the separation
of church and state doctrine by recommending that prayer be implemented in schools. Of course, there are two sides to that issue and the lines between the different opinions are
blurred. One might suggest that prayer is good for anyone and can encompass many belief systems--as most religions overlap in terms of concepts--so that the implementation of prayer in schools
does not really negate the separation of church and state dictum. But others disagree, suggesting that atheists and deists are not embraced by such practices and further, there is no
place for religion in the schools. The debate is heated. First, it should be noted that there are many good reasons for inclusion. Cohen (1994) explains that he grew
up with school prayer and can attest to the fact that it did not harm him at all. In fact many do make the argument that school prayer is not
