some argue that we should pray often and loudly, others indicate that prayer is a personal conversation with God and is something quite sacred. Today it seems that many people may not admit that they pray, or it may be that many people do not pray in a world filled with the pursuit of worldly success. For those who truly want some powerful connection with God, however, prayer is still a very important act. In St. Bernard of Clairvauxs "On Loving God" we can find implications for prayer that can perhaps assist one seeking a more positive and personal approach to prayer. The following paper examines what Bernard has to say about prayer. Prayer in "On Loving God" In the beginning of his work Bernard, "a man of contemplative quiet, peace, and seclusion, a writer of the loftiest words on loving God," proves himself to be a humble man who is apparently often sought out for prayers, at least in this particular text (Christianity Today.com, 2005). He states that "Hitherto you have been wont to seek prayers from me, not the solving of problems; although I count myself sufficient for neither" He indicates that he wishes there was someone better than himself that the individual had sought out, but that he would do his best to convey his thoughts on loving God in the hopes it can help others, focusing only on loving God, stating, "This one, as to loving God, I will deal with as He shall teach me; for it is sweetest, it can be handled most safely, and it will be most profitable" (Bernard Dedication).
