Religion is therefore part of the culture and children, from the earliest days in schools are immersed in religion, not only to allow them to learn, but as the framework by which they should live their lives. Some of the earliest memories will be of religious festivals and events. In a country where it is the obligation of the state to provide religious education to pupils from kindergarten through to senior school it is not surprising that a school would want to instil the desire and faith to prayer in a manner that will ensure the following of the same beliefs and values when the pupil does leave school. The reseach to be undertaken looks at the role of prayer by 16 year old in Malta. The literature review will need to look at the pray and 16 year olds as well as the context of religion and prayer in Maltese schools. 2. Adolescents and Prayer Looking at the teaching and use of prayer by 16 year old there is a distinct lack of in depth research, especially in single areas such as Malta. Te difficulties are partly due to the nature of the potential sample, adolescents under the age of 18 pose specific ethical issues regarding aspects of consent and reliability (Streib, 2002, McKinney et al, 1999). However broadening the scope there ahs been some research undertaken globally into prayer and adolescents. Due to the difficulty in obtaining reseach purely into 16 year olds, and tine inappropriateness to confirm this simply to one age group as maturity can very widely at this age, especially between male and female subjects.
