involved in some of the decisions making process concerning diagnosis and treatment. This is a change seen in all areas of nursing, but is especially emphasised for practice nurses (Montgomery,
2003). The role of a practice nurse is diverse and very different from other forms of nursing. The job may involve giving immunisations to children or to those needing
injections ready for international travel (CPHVA, 2004, Prospects, 2004). Also, providing health education and information, such as family planning and health promotion issues. The management of treatment for minor injuries,
aiding the general practitioner with any minor surgery and carrying out minor procedures themselves, such as ear syringing and the collection of samples to be sent to pathology laboratories (CPHVA,
2004, Prospects, 2004). The practice nurse may also provide screening services for the GP such as undertaking the health checks when a
patient initially registers with a practice, smear tests and pregnancy tests (CPHVA, 2004, Prospects, 2004). Many of the clinics seen in general practitioner surgeries are run by practice nurses, only
making referrals to other members of the healthcare team when required, These include clinics such as well women (or man) clinics, asthma clinics, diabetes clinics, skin condition clinics and many
other clinics (Prospects, 2004). Practice nursing is a discipline in its own right , there is a broad scope of knowledge required, including first aid, psychology, and the
