back to normal. In Jacksons story we have many people, the whole town in fact, who are powerless, though Mrs. Hutchinson is the victim of the event. The following paper
examines the powerlessness possessed by Heminways girl and Jacksons Mrs. Hutchinson. The Girl and Mrs. Hutchinson In Hemingways story the girl and the man are sitting and drinking,
waiting for a bus so they can move on and get her an abortion, though the word abortion is never used. She asks questions of the man, never seeming to
possess any ability to communicate show power. She is always uncertain and asks him "And if I do it youll be happy and things will be like they were and
youll love me?" (Hemingway). She asks questions for reassurance and then when he seems to have reassured her she says she will do it because "I dont care about me"
(Hemingway). At the same time she knows that things will never be the same as she is pushed in a direction she obviously feels uncomfortable with. She eventually just tells
him that she wants to stop talking about it, indicating she feels completely powerless and is just going to do it and get it over with. In Jacksons story
we have an entire town that is powerless in the face of the traditional lottery where someone will have their name drawn and then be stoned to death. The entire
town feels the tension of the choice that will come. One woman, Mrs. Hutchinson tries, like the other townspeople, to make it seem like it is just a fun yearly
