The Native American Pow Wow is one of the more interesting events in American culture. It is also one of the most misunderstood events. The pow wow
is a festival. It is a time of meeting friends and eating good food. It is a time of honoring ones traditions. It is also a mercenary
time, a time when Native American dancers compete for money and vendors compete for the publics dollars. Interestingly, from a macroscopic perspective the pow wow is basically the same
regardless of where it is being held and regardless of what tribe is hosting it. There are minor differences of course but the main features remain the same.
If we were to travel to the Big Pine Reservation of California to witness a pow wow Paiute style, we would witness
an event that is quite similar to pow wows that are hosted around the nation by other groups. The reason is that the pow wow is an invention of
recent times, an invention where to be Indian dictated that participants dressed in a certain way and danced certain dances. In reality, the pow wow as we see it
today has little relation to traditional Paiute culture! In reality the pow wow evolved as much in response to European need and desire
as Native need and desire. As a consequence of their desire to obtain trade goods from these non-Native peoples some would say that Native Americans simply decided to provide
what it was that non-Natives wanted. This became a formative factor in the ultimate evolution of the modern pow wow. While pow
