things have changed, and ignore the status quo that suggests women still always get the short end of the stick. Given that inequality is present and always has been, a
precarious problem is that women are more likely to live in poverty than men. Today, the homeless man is an aberration. Homeless women and families headed by women seem to
surface in shelters. Yet, women have always had a difficult time and in part, this is because it was hard for women to get jobs. Women find themselves impoverished more
often than do their male counterparts. Trattner (1994) contends that poverty is a rather natural condition, and born out of urban life. Indeed, poverty is known to both men
and women but again, women have always had a more difficult time. This is in part due to the fact that they relied on husbands to earn money. When spouses
were killed in war, or died prematurely, there were problems. Women who had children had a very difficult time. There were few charitable funds for them (1994). Trattner explains
that "many widows therefore were forced to give up their children solely because they could not make ends meet" (1994, p.222). The women were in a sort of Catch-22 situation.
Charities did not want to contribute to able bodied women, but at the time women could barely make a living and even when they tried to keep their children,
found they were working very long hours and could not handle that situation for long (1994). As a result, these impoverished women struggled. However, it was a bit easier in
colonial days as the townspeople would jump in and take turns caring for impoverished women one at a time (1994). During Civil War times, pensions were extended to widows and
