This compares with an estimated thirteen percent of Americans that live below the poverty line. In some respects then Thailand is not all that impoverished. In others,
however, the signs of impoverishment are many. This is especially true in the more remote areas of the country where there is little opportunity for the betterment of life.
The inner city too, however, has its own examples of impoverishment. The question might be asked just why are these people impoverished? Are the reasons internal or
external? To examine the question presented above it is first helpful to review some of Thai history. Occupied by the Japanese during
World War II, the country was subject to the whim of its invaders. While the country was being held hostage, however, there was considerable effort within to remedy the
situation which the Thais found intolerable. The Free Thai Movement was one such effort. That movement had, in fact, resisted the initial Japanese invasion in itself. Thailand
found herself in favor with the allies and this position allowed many positive developments in Thailand both immediately after the war and extending on into her future.
Under the leadership of Pridi Banomyong (a man whose life had been immersed in the effort to convert Thai from the monarchy that it was during
the early twentieth century to a constitutional monarchy for years before the arrival of the Japanese) and Seni Pramoj (the Thai ambassador to the US), the Free Thai movement was
