Von Huben 10/2010 Please Introduction Poverty is a human problem, not confined to one state, region or nation. This paper compares poverty and its effects in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Tampa, Florida. Discussion Well start with a "snapshot" of poverty in Tampa, courtesy of the U.S. Census Bureau. In their "quick facts" for Tampa, its revealed that in 2000, there were 124, 758 households in the city and 6,337,929; the number of persons per household is 2.36 in Tampa and 2.46 in the state ("Tampa (City), Florida"). In 1999, median household income was $34,415 in the city but higher in the state: $38,829 ("Tampa (City), Florida"). Again in 1999, a demographic called "per capita money income" was $21,953 for the city but $21,557 for the state, the first time the city has been higher ("Tampa (City), Florida"). But when it comes to the poverty level, Tampa is doing much poorer than the state: the percent of persons below the poverty level in the city of Tampa in 1999 was 18.1% but the percentage was only 12.5% throughout the state of Florida ("Tampa (City), Florida"). Its not clear why Tampa should have so many more people in poverty than the state average. It is growing, and more people in general mean more people in each specific category, but its not growing as fast as the state, so that doesnt hold water. It might be that there are a substantial number of retirees, but again, the Census Bureau shows that only 12.5% of the population ...
