This 25 page report discusses poverty in America and its impact on quite nearly every problem in America - crime, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, AIDS, spouse abuse, malnutrition, school drop-out rates and more. Since the 1960s and 1970s, policymakers have fiercely debated the appropriate role of government in providing solutions to these problems. Treating only the symptoms of poverty is costly, and trying to eliminate poverty by isolating the poor sacrifices the approach proven to be most effective: integration into mainstream society. This report examines some of the most significant impacts of poverty in modern America. Bibliography lists 22 sources.

poverty. Too often, politicians, educators, writers and others commenting on America on the eve of the 21st century present elaborate scenarios for the reasons the country has as many problems
as it does. Americas problems are laid at the feet of the conservative right-wingers or the liberal left. Crime is blamed on judicial policies that are too soft
or too hard. Teen pregnancy is blamed on the decay of the family or the permissiveness of society. The list goes on and on.
However, the basic truth of the matter is better expressed or explained in terms of the significant economic gap that exists in the United States.
The country has become not only a nation of the "haves" and the "have-nots," but a nation of the "haves" and the "have-nothings." In spite of the largest peacetime economic
expansion in history, stands as the nations most conspicuous and far-reaching failure. It has become the single most pervasive socioeconomic problem in American society, and has transcended racial differences and
geographical locations. Edmonson (1998) presents some disturbing statistics when he points out that Americas wealthiest counties are in exclusive suburbs of large metropolitan areas, wealthy retirement enclaves and financial centers.
Poverty is widespread in rural counties without economic bases. There are also 625 counties in the US where poverty and wealth are high and live side by side. There are
only 55 counties in the United States with neither high wealth nor high poverty. Since the 1960s and 1970s, policymakers have fiercely debated
