The state of Alabama is a state in the nation that is suffering greatly from poverty as it ranks #10 in the nation for poverty (Tuscaloosa News, 2007). The following paper examines poverty in Alabama. Poverty in Alabama "In Tuscaloosa County in 2004, the latest year for which information is available, the poverty rate was 17.2 percent and the median income was $36,598" (Tuscaloosa News, 2007). It seems that part of the reason for Alabama coming in at this position, rather than perhaps higher, is because other states have suffered harsher realities which has brought them in above Alabama, although Alabamas poverty figures have not changed much for several years. In fact, "its median income is the fifth lowest in the nation" (Tuscaloosa News, 2007). The states that rank above, of financially below, Alabama are, starting with the number one highest poverty rate, "Mississippi...District of Columbia, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arkansas, West Virginia, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Texas" (Tuscaloosa News, 2007). It should, however, be noted that in the past Alabama has also ranked higher on this list, thus suffering more in relationship to poverty than it does now (Tuscaloosa News, 2007). For example, in 1995 it was the fourth most impoverished state and in 1980 it was actually third on that list (Tuscaloosa News, 2007).
