"In Tuscaloosa County in 2004, the latest year for which information is available, the poverty rate was 17.2 percent and the median income was $36,598" (Tuscaloosa News, 2007). It seems
that part of the reason for Alabama coming in at this position, rather than perhaps higher, is because other states have suffered harsher realities which has brought them in above
