Children that are impoverished suffer in many respects not the least of which is nutritionally. Poor childhood nutrition can result in numerous short and long term effects. These
effects include physiological problems as well as mental problems. Adequate nutrition during infancy and early childhood is critical to healthy development. As a society we too often
underestimate the impacts of poor nutrition. Even a parents nutritional status as it existed before a child was even conceived can affect lifelong childhood development (Shepherd 49). Poverty,
however, often makes such problems a reality for far too many families. Various efforts have been made to define poverty and its impacts. Our
government, for example, has provided figures as to what incomes fall into the poverty classification. The modern media has produced various exposes of poverty. All of these attempts,
unfortunately, do little to clearly depict the true nature of poverty. What is clear is that the impacts of poverty, particularly as they apply to the short and long-term
impacts of poor childhood nutrition, are tremendous. Nutrition during infancy is known to be optimized in most cases when a mother breast feeds her child. Human milk is far
superior to meeting the needs of human infants than is any other type of milk. While animal milks such as cow and goat milk can, and have, been utilized
in feeding human infants; they are inferior to human milk. Formulas share this inferiority as well. Shepherd (49) reports improvements in infant weight gain, less propensity for obesity
in later life, and even advantages in terms of cognitive development. Human milk is advantageous to the infants physical and mental development for a number of reasons.
