causes. Two fo the most well known theorists who delved into the reality of poverty, and its causes, were Charles Booth and Seebohm Rowntree. The following paper examines their studies
and what they ultimately contributed to understanding the condition of poverty. Poverty Studies: Booth and Rowntree "Charles Booth was a businessman
who felt that different groups grossly exaggerated the extent of poverty, including the Marxist Social Democratic Federation" (White, 2007). Apparently this particular group had done a survey wherein they claimed
that 25% of the people, the working people, actually lived in poverty (White, 2007). Booth felt this was an incredibly exaggeration and set out to conduct a study or survey
of his own (White, 2007). Booth was, perhaps like many in his time, of the belief that "poverty was...the fault of the individual" (BBC News, 2007). According to one
author, "Bored with running his successful business, Booth decided to investigate the incidence of pauperism in the East End of the city" (Spartacus [1], 2007). He set upon a study
of the "Life and Labour of the People in London" and actually discovered that the rate of poverty was higher than 25%, existing more at the level of 30% (White,
2007). What Booth revealed was that many people who lived in poverty did not do so from their lack of work
or determination but that low wages and things like seasonal work put many people within an impoverished level of existence (White, 2007). In essence, his study, or studies, revealed that
