developing nation undertake trade, invariably is the developed nation that has most power. The general perception is of powerful nations stripping the resources of the poorer nations, utilizing cheap
labour and giving little back. It is often cited, anecdotally, that even when poor nations are becoming richer, that the gap between them and the developing nations is still widening
as the benefits and advantages of globalisation are not being shared equally among those taking part. However, poverty and inequality are not always the same thing, whilst they may be
associated, where poverty is being reduced, it needs to be remembered that this is a subjective judgement, whilst inequality is an easier judgment and is not eliminated with heaver cash
flows entering a country. Poverty is officially measured by the World Bank as those who live on $1 a day, or less. The
initial aim was for the numbers of individual living at this level would be reduced by 15% by the year 2015. Indian economist and former member of staff for the
Wold Bank; Surjit S. Bhalla, claims that this target has already been reached (Clifford, 2003). The same economist also claims that inequality has reached the lowest in the last half
century (Clifford, 2003). There are many cases cited to demonstrate the positive effects of globalization, such as faster growing economies due to global integration, with poverty reduction being seen in
