Poverty obeys no geographic, racial, or cultural borders yet it impacts specific members of our society and, indeed, the world society as a whole. Various attempts have
been put into place to define poverty and its impacts. These include government-provided figures as to what incomes fall into the poverty classification and unofficial exposes of poverty such
as those rendered by the modern media. All of these attempts, unfortunately, do little to clearly depict the true nature of poverty. What is clear is that the
impacts of poverty are tremendous. The current perception of poverty is that it affects largely the black and largely the young but it
also affects whites and other races and the old. In reality poverty is a condition which sees no age or race boundaries. It has escalated rather than declined
over the history of our country. This escalation can be attributed to a number of factors, one of the most prominent of which is the decline of the nuclear
family, a decline which can be traced back to the movement of people from the largely agrarian subsistence patterns of our forefathers to the industrial subsistence patterns of today.
If we define poverty from a strictly numeric perspective, as the so-called "poverty lines" provided by our respective governments tend to do; it is easy to understand how single parent
homes in particular could be more likely to suffer from poverty than families that enjoy the income and support of both parents. Single mothers, in particular, tend to be
