countries use different formulas to determine whether people fall ahead or below their respective poverty lines. In America, the US Census Bureau uses a set of money income thresholds that vary by family size. Therefore, if a familys total income is less than the familys threshold then every individual in that family is considered to be living in poverty. America is not as poor as other countries and therefore ranks relatively low in regards to the percentage of citizens living in poverty. There are numerous reasons for this and most of them have to do with the nations wealth and social programs that have been established to help keep American citizens out of poverty. In addition, there are different severities of poverty. In America, poverty could mean a family living in a poor house in a dilapidated neighborhood yet still having the means and resources to buy food and clothing. In Africa, for example, poverty could mean a family on the brink of death due to lack of food, nutrition and water. This essay will compare how America ranks to some other countries around the world in regards to poverty while portraying some alarming statistics of the number of people living below the poverty line in America and across the globe. As mentioned earlier, poverty in America has steadily inclined since 2000 (Medical News, 2006). Much of this is due to the fact that low-income families continue to have children even though they lack the means to provide proper food, clothing and education for their offspring.
