Fry McComish, Campbell-Voytal and Rowland, (2007) note that women have traditionally relied on the support of doulas in regards to labor and for postpartum support. While doula care has been studied extensively, research that has examined the benefits that doulas can contribute to postpartum care has been lacking (Fry McComish, Campbell-Voytal and Rowland, 2007). Employing ethnographic methodology, such as "participant observation and interview," Fry McComish, Campbell-Voytal and Rowland (2007) investigated the efficacy of postpartum doula practice. The purpose of this investigation was to explore this topic further, drawing on the information from the Fry McComish, Campbell-Voytal and Rowland study. Review of the literature indicates the need for more research regarding support for postpartum mothers, particularly first-time mothers. Literature Review The worlds of "medical care and social support dont comfortably intersect" (Abramson, 2004, p. 34). Therefore, Abramson discusses a community-based doula model that endeavors to integrate social support into the lives of women over the passage of time. The Chicago Health Connection is a collaborative pilot project that has the goal of recreating the "ongoing, continuous fabric of support that was part of the traditional birth and parenting experience" in previous eras (Abramson, 2004, p. 34). This doula program recruits doulas from the community being served. The model used is an extended intervention that begins early in pregnancy, so that a trusting relationship develops over time.
