the screen. As such, his work has an idealistic intent, along with an artistic message. Such a goal has not been associated with the Coen brothers. George Clooney said, "Theres
not a lot of great messages in their films. . . . Joel and Ethan dont really set out to teach anything . . . . " (Dalton).
While not interested in teaching, meaning is essential to the Coens postmodern dialectic and correlations can be drawn between postmodern aesthetics and No
Country for Old Men. Critics aside, the directors have a purpose in killing off their Texas border cowboy. As the icon fades
away, so has the era of the American west. This death will be (and already is) at the hands of unfathomable brutal gangland violence, making West Texas no longer a
place for old men. The Coens Style and Intent This is all part
and parcel of the postmodern style employed by the Coens, which they use to great effect. Postmodernism involves distancing away from meaning while invoking the popular cultures fascination with anxiety,
impotence and passivity. Cinematic realism is the ability of filmmakers to "depict and unravel structures of meaning" that are essential to popular cultures concepts of life. Without such meaning, there
