to assess the way in which postmodernist thinkers such as Foucault and Bauman regard issues such as sex and madness in reference to the state, social control and social ethics,
it is perhaps useful to attempt a brief overview of the way in which postmodernism itself might be defined, especially in its transition from the relatively small confines of intellectual
to its application in much broader sociological and political arenas.
For instance, Angermuller (2004) makes the point that whereas postmodernism could originally have been regarded as a primarily intellectual movement in its early days, it is
increasingly becoming divided into different factions which now have a direct relevance to opposing political standpoints; this allows it to be seen as a discursive pattern, and gives rise to
questions regarding its current definition, and whether it is possible to go beyond its parameters. Epstein (1997) points out the difficulties of establishing the boundaries of postmodernism, noting that, for
example, whilst it may be encountered more frequently in the humanities, it can also be seen as influential in the area of social sciences.
It is therefore not possible to allocate it to
specific disciplines, since it can transcend disciplinary boundaries: however, the trends which characterise postmodernism tend to be fluid in the way that they exert temporary influence and then disappear, which
