theory is generally useful for understanding the present world, but it is the lens in which the world is viewed that provides a particular perspective. Classical sociology for example helps
to explain a changing world, and the psychology of that world. For example, anomie helps to explain how change--and not what particular change--is responsible for other phenomena such as suicide.
Who would think that the arrival of spring would prompt people to kill themselves. Any change will alter the landscape and so classical theory to a great extent is applicable
to many generations. It explains activities that are found in different times and places. Marxism is also still useful as any time period may be analyzed in terms of social
stratification. Postmodern sociological theory however is different as it is more political and more pertinent to current events. Lemert for example acknowledges that a significant change in the worlds structure
has occurred (Lippert, 2000). He suggests that postmodernism may be understood by talking about modernism and distinguishing three types of postmodern social theory (Lippert, 2000). The three types are
radical postmodernism that is associated with the writings of Jean Baudrillard, Guy Debord and Jean-Francois Lyotard (Lippert, 2000). Then, there is radical modernism that is aligned with the Frankfurt
School (Lippert, 2000). Strategic postmodernism may be associated with Foucault, Derrida and Lacan (Lippert, 2000). An example of this new type of thinking involves technology. This is important as sociology
has to change as technology develops. Today, there is a new phenomenon where instead of Big Brother watching citizens, the citizens are watching the police and the government with their
