a poster copy as opposed to what they define as real art. But also, the poster has been used politically. It is art but it is infused with a vitality
that other types of works can never posses. Aesthetically, the value of the poster varies. In examining poster art historically, Lears (1995) writes: "Within a few years, national advertisers
had succeeded in domestic commercial poster art, sanitizing the exoticism and reviving the sentimental genre traditions of nineteenth century chromolithography, and claiming major advances in professionalism" (p.293). Poster art is
nothing new. I was not new in the twentieth century either. Yet, it has a place in history and in examining the poster historically and particularly in Poland and South
Africa there is much to report. While the plight of the poster is arguable at best, it is certainly something that has influenced movements abroad. In Poland after World War
II, there was not only an attempt to make a statement but to make great art as well. In South Africa apartheid territory, posters did send a message but the
art was more simplistic in nature and hardly anything special. Still, each genre in its own right made its mark and deserves a place in art history, even though the
works of art are simply posters. It should also be noted that as the political system changed in Poland after the Second World War, there was a great influence on
the creation of Polish poster design ("Polish Jazz Story," 2009). Also, the affairs of state were shaped by the history of Polish jazz ("Polish Jazz Story," 2009). Poster art as
