When individuals examine what -- if any -- limits should be placed upon the methods and actions taken against those who do not "believe as we do," it is important to consider the current state of foreign affairs and the extent to which America has been force to defend its very existence. One of the greatest impacts of McCarthyism is how it represented a perceived threat to what it means to be an American; the devastating impact of recent terrorist activities against this country illustrates, by comparison, a decidedly more tangible threat that calls for drastic measures of protection. The unsavory era of McCarthyism reflected a time during the 1950s when Senator Joseph McCarthy sought to eradicate the United States of Communist infiltration - both real and perceived. His accusations of prominent personalities and ordinary folks alike having Communist ties instigated what has been deemed a necessary approach to defending the "American Way of Life;" only years after this modern-day witch hunt did many of McCarthys then-supporters realize at what cost such a blatant display of ignorance meant to the United States (Foster, 2005; Hersh, 2005).
