shake their heads. A Kiki Smith sculpture of a woman crawling naked across the floor, trailing excrement behind her, is outside their experience. They may consider it gross, disturbing or
just in bad taste, but art? Never. Art is Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Raphael and Velasquez; Cezanne and Monet and Renoir-not Warhol. The stuff on these walls, they say, looks like something
my 4-year old could draw. And some of it is so revolting I want to puke. Whats going on here? The answer is so simple its become a clich?: art,
like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. But much of contemporary art makes no attempt to define or express beauty, instead it seems to celebrate ugliness, filth and
disease. This, it can be argued, is part of the idea of "art as life"-a reflection of what the artists see in the world around them. One might legitimately ask
why todays artists see nothing but ugliness and degradation when there are still so many lovely things left in the world. It may be that they are self-indulgent, a point
addressed by Zinsmeister in a hilarious article, quoted later in this essay. For now, lets simply consider that much of contemporary art seems extremely unpleasant, some of it is bizarre,
