(PRC), the ROC relocated its government to Taipei, Taiwan in 1949. The ROC considered itself to be the legitimate government of China and held a United Nations set until 1971,
when it was replaced by the PRC and the ROC continues to maintain official diplomatic relations with many states. As this curious political position implies, the identity of the
island is represented differently depending the group or nation being consulted, as it has been represented as a separate country or a territory or the legitimate representative of the Chinese
people as a whole. The following paper contrasts and compares various representations of contemporary Taiwanese society. First, the twentieth century history of the island will be examined in order
to provide background, but then, various film and print representations of Taiwan will be presented before offering conclusions and observations relative to this island culture and society. Taiwan
occupies a precarious position in regards to its relationship with mainland China, as the PRC maintains that Taiwan "is, always has been, and ever shall be, part of China" (Rigger
133). However, precisely how Taiwan should relate to China has been an issuing of ongoing debate in Taiwan for over six decades. The Taiwanese position that the ROC was the
legitimate government of both Taiwan and China began to change in the 1990s when democracy was introduced and new leaders were elected. However, when the Kuomintang (KMT), the Chinese Nationalist
Party, rose to power, the ROC government reverted back to the position that mainland China (Rigger 134). The KMT saw any endeavor to differentiate Taiwan from China as "disloyal, even
