Today we see that China, despite the fall of the Soviet Union is still a very powerful communist nation while Japan is far more of a democratic nation. The following paper examines, comparing and contrasting, the two nations and their development since WWII. China and Japan In the case of Japan as well as China, perhaps years of chaos and battle had helped to place the nations in a position where they were ready for something new. The citizens were themselves ready for something different, new, strong, and reliable. This spelled different directions, of course, for each respective nation. In the case of China we note that "for the first time in decades a Chinese government was met with peace, instead of massive military opposition, within its territory."1 Because they had just come out of WWII with a great deal of military experience and a new leadership there was a sense of true efficiency on the part of the new direction and "Results were impressive by any standard, and popular support was widespread."2 With Japan there was apparently little choice to change somehow after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the emperor asked the people of Japan to agree to peach "by enduring the unendurable and suffering what is insufferable by surrendering to the Allied powers."3 After this signing of surrender there were a couple of years where the United States was in control of ensuring that Japan changed its ways, so to speak. "The new Japanese constitution (often called the MacArthur Constitution) came into force...Constitutional reforms were accompanied by economic reforms, including agricultural land redistribution, reestablishment of trade unions, and severe proscriptions on zaibatsu."4 From these pieces of information it ...
