But much research has come out in recent years that indicate how many people who are in the hospital, in ICU, for one condition or another may well suffer post traumatic stress disorder from procedures and from discomfort and pain. The following paper examines this topic through a news article and then a journal article. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Hospital Setting The news story that involves this topic comes from a online edition of Health Beat from ABC. The article indicates that technology has improved so much that millions of people in America who are treated in intensive care units are surviving but at the same time it is noted that many of these individuals may essentially leave the ICU with post traumatic stress disorder. This is evident from a study that comes from the University of Washington, and a study that indicates how one out of five patients seems to suffer. "The pain and often frightening medical procedures can trigger nightmares and flashbacks that can last for months" (ABC, 2008). The article indicates how the researchers believe it is important for patients who experience flashbacks and painful memories to seek out a psychologist and they recommend patients to do so because if such fears and problems are dealt with quickly, before they become firmly imbedded in a patients mind, they can be more adequately treated.
