As this suggests, all ages of clients are susceptible to the negative effects of PTSD. People who cope with PTSD can experience intense feelings of fear, helplessness or horror years after the experience triggering the disorder. The following examination of nursing literature on this topic provides an overview of PTSD, its symptoms and treatment. PTSD -- Description of the disorder Basically, PTSD describes the mental condition of an individual who has experienced a traumatic event and cannot shake off the experience, but continues to relive painful emotions. An adult experiencing PTSD may exhibit an "exaggerated startle reflex, sleep disturbances and nightmares, irritability, angry outbursts, difficulty concentrating, hallucinations, sexual dysfunction...(or) an inability to speak about the tragedy" (Fagan and Freme, 2004, p. 52). A PTSD episode activates the individuals "flight or fight" responses due to the perceived realism of the remembered memories. While these neuro-chemical reactions are appropriate to survival situations, they are debilitating if activated once the threat is passed (Fagan and Freme, 2004). The diagnosis of PTSD is no made until 1 month after the exposure to the initiating traumatic event (Stein, 2002). If PTSD-like symptoms become evidence and are intense prior to this point, the diagnosis of acute stress disorder is applied (Stein, 2002). DSM-IV criteria for diagnosing PTSD is as follows: 1. Traumatic criteria -- The individual was exposed to trauma and responded with intense fear or distress. 2. Re-experiencing criteria -- Persistent re-experiencing the event through nightmares, intrusive daytime recollections, flashbacks, physiological responses to reminders of the event. 3.
