researched from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Unless otherwise noted, the outline of the criterion for diagnosis of PTSD
was derived from this source. The systematic processes for diagnosing PTSD includes the following criteria: Criterion A. The person who has been exposed must demonstrate both of the
following: 1. the person must have experienced, witnessed or was confronted with an event that involved actual or threatened death or serious injury to oneself or others, and
2. The persons response to a traumatic event must include feelings of intense fear, horror, or helplessness (or in children, disorganized or agitated behaviors). Criterion B. The
traumatic event is then re experienced through one or more of the following processes: 1. recurring and persistent intrusive and distressing recollections of the event that include specific
images, thoughts and perceptions and in young children can be demonstrated through repetitive play that follows common themes related to the trauma; 2. recurrent dreams with or without recognizable content;
3. a sense or action that suggests that the traumatic event is recurring, and in young children, trauma-specific reenactment may occur; 4. intense and problematic psychological desires when presented
with cues that suggests any part of the traumatic event; and 5. physiological reactivity to internal or external cues that resemble any part of the traumatic event. Criterion
