trends in post-compulsory education, and recent reforms. Broad Sectors of Post-Compulsory Education There are "a range of pressures on the provision of post-compulsory education" related to both
the curriculum "in years 11 and 12 ... and ... to the emerging opportunities and constraints associated with the transition of students from school to post-school destinations" (Post-compulsory education review).
Among other things, they include the "growth of vocational education and training in schools and the emergence of more flexible pathways into universities" (Post-compulsory education review). Lets take
a look at these opportunities and constraints. There are "three broad education sectors in Australia": the "schools sector"; the "vocational education and training sector" and the "higher education sector" (National
Report on the development of education in Australia, 1996). The schools sector is divided in government (public) and non-government (private) schools; nearly two-thirds of young people are educated in
public schools; another quarter are educated in "non-government Catholic schools" and the remainder are taught at "non-government independent schools" (National report on the development of education in Australia, 1996). The
vocational education and training (VET) sector comprises private sector training programs; VET in schools; "adult and community education"; on the job training; and "the publicly funded and nationally recognized Technical
and Further Education System (TAFE) which is the major provider" (National Report on the development of education in Australia, 1996). The higher education sector includes universities "offering diplomas, degrees
and higher qualifications in a range of academic, professional and vocational fields" (National report on the development of education in Australia, 1996). There are "two broad sectors of schooling in
