what the end of the Cold War has meant for Europe in political, social and economic terms, there are a number of elements which need to be taken into account,
not only with regard to the changes which have taken place in Europe itself but the effect of the ending of the Cold War on the superpowers of Russia and
the USA. The major changes which took place at the end of the twentieth century can be seen to have had a significant impact not only on the respective ideologies
of East and West but also on the way that the former superpowers perceived each other, and Europe as a whole.
For example, as Kreis (2002) points out, even if the events of 1989 could
be construed as signalling a victory for western government and ways of life (Kreis, 2002, PG) it is not immediately evident what this might mean in practical terms. For instance,
the nations of Eastern Europe had long become accustomed to Soviet domination, and would now find it difficult to deal with Western models of government, and economic systems.
In addition, it was
also the case that the countries in question had undergone revision of their own histories and political corruption, which would make integrating into the Western democratic model more difficult. Eastern
Europe was also suffering from rising inflation and an increasing unemployment problem, alongside political corruption and ethnic divisions, which hindered their ability to compete with Western nations economically: in addition,
