might work better than others. SCHIZOPHRENIA George Winokur (1996) writes in his book The Natural History of Mania, Depression, and Schizophrenia, that
in managing patients with schizophrenia there are some key warning signs to look out for. Some of this would include such things as "Prodromal signs, which often precede a
psychotic episode by two or more days, include sudden onset of insomnia, tension, anxiety, inability to concentrate, restlessness, and depression." Our knowledge of
schizophrenia has grown with our understanding of the brain and the personality. It was in 1896 that Emil Kraepelin developed the term dementia praecox to describe several illnesses that
had schizophrenic-like symptoms. He felt that dementia was caused by an irreversible deterioration of the brain. In 1911, Eugene Bleuler coined the term schizophrenia, which actually means splitting
of the mind. This tended to describe the way that those persons with schizophrenia seemed to separate their thoughts from their feelings, and their feelings from their behaviors. Bleuler
believed that schizophrenia was a psychological rather than a physical problem and he felt that it could best be treated by a course of counseling (Lewontin 1984).
