for great change in the self. We want to discuss that precept in the context of Jean Rhyss novel Wide Sargasso Sea. Wide Sargasso Sea is a "prequel"
to the classic Bronte novel, Jane Eyre. It tells of the extended visit Mr. Rochester makes to the West Indies, and of Antoinette, the woman he meets and marries there.
In the Bronte novel, Rochesters wife is a shadowy figure, a horror kept locked away because she has gone completely mad. Finally, of course, her madness leads her to burn
down Thornfield Hall, and she dies in the fire. But the Antoinette who haunts Thornfield is not the beautiful vibrant girl who appears in Rhyss novel. Indeed, its easy to
see why Rochester becomes infatuated with her; she embodies the tropics for him: the danger, sensuality and wildness that are so dangerous yet almost irresistibly attractive, particularly to the English.
Over the course of the novel, both these characters change dramatically, but its hard to say that the changes are positive. But perhaps we need to ask if changes
must be positive to be important; even unpleasant revelations can help us grow, and certainly there is a sort of peace to be found in facing some of the uglier
aspects of life. The opening pages of the novel take us to Jamaica, and they are very evocative. They tell us of the beautiful, lush tropics and indeed it seems
we can even smell the island. But is this really the way it was, or is this the ideal presented to us by our memory? Memory is a tricky thing;
when we look back, things seem much more beautiful, or exciting, or wonderful than they were in actuality. Into this landscape comes Rochester, and it seduces him. It seems to
