Digital imaging opens up whole new avenues of patient care which existed
only in the imaginations of a few far sighted individuals only a few years ago. The possibilities which exist can be seen most readily when reviewing some of the
most commonly utilized radiographic techniques and conditions. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is one of the more effective imaging technologies for a diversity of medical problems. Yagoda (2001) observes that
PET is: "a sophisticated, physiology-based imaging technique that provides information about the function of tissues
and organs" Breast cancer patients are among those to have greatly benefited from PET (Drug
Topic, 2002). PET is particularly valued in the management of patients with recurring, advanced, or mestatic forms of breast cancer (Drug Topic, 2002). Fortunately, reimbursements have been available
for PET imaging since the early 2000s. Medicare and private insurers alike now offer reimbursement for PET imaging. With the availability of such reimbursement, however, comes the potential
for certain pitfalls. Those pitfalls include the overuse of the technology by medical professionals in instances when other technology might be more appropriate.
The technological advances which have been made in radiology, advances such as the development of PET, have in general resulted in improved patient outcome. Many, however, have yet
to be incorporated into common medical utilization. The reasons for this are multifaceted but most often either revolve around cost or perception of the efficacy of the technique.
