New World. This would occur centuries ago, but waves of immigration would be seen at different times in the nations history. To some extent, immigration is good. It helps to create a diverse population that can assist the nation to become more flexible and add to its character. On the other hand, immigration-or the influx of more people-places a strain on the infrastructure of the cities around America as well as on federal resources. Americas cities already enjoy a large, diverse population. Thus, sharing resources is in fact something with which people become angry. On top of that is the fact that much immigration is not done legally. Before looking at both sides of the issue, a bit of history is relevant. During the nineteenth century, the nation was actually ambivalent about the policies of immigration and the fact that people were coming to the country in droves (Tyrrell 78). During the 1850s, a party called the Know Nothings was against immigration completely but when towards the end of he century many Irish and Italians came to the states, older immigrants were also against it (Tyrrell 78). It did not matter whether to not someone was an immigrant themselves as many people do not want to add to the population. This is understandable because resources are finite. Later in the twentieth century, immigration was something desirable and many Americans were not opposed to the influx of people (Tyrrell 78). However, things would change and today people are often against immigration, with particular attention to illegal immigration (Tyrrell 78). In examining immigration-both legal and illegal-positive and negative aspects will be compared.
