that the Portuguese were like the first Europeans to colonize Asia; however, they were the last to leave (50). Portugal did possess Macau for quite awhile and even after a
bloody battle with China, its status was questionable. Macau was quite significantly Portugals final possession. It had been in the hands of the Portuguese since 1557 ("Another end" 26).
But it also seems to have been a property which encouraged a tug of war over the centuries. For example, in 1887, China ceded sovereignty over Macau to
Portugal ("Key dates" PG). During various wars and outbursts, there were talks about rule over Macau and in fact during the mid-1960s, when a cultural revolution erupted in China, riots
in Macau led to Portugal offering the colony to China but China declined to take over (PG). It would not be until 1999 when China would assume control over Macau
once again (PG). Thus, the Portuguese Empire, or remnants of it, did persist to the end of the twentieth century. Some question the extent of the Portuguese Empire. To
what extent did it embrace Southeast Asia? First, it is important to look at Portugal and see what type of leadership it exhibited in general. Some have compared the nation
to Britain, as a colonial ruler, and suggested that unlike the British, the Portuguese have only built schools on a small basis (Emerson 50). This is an important factor as
education assimilates the people. Perhaps Portugals negligence of this important factor had led to some weakness over the years. Yet, the empire did exist and some ask why such
