The shipping industry is no different; changes in technology have changed the way in which it operates, as well as facilitating large increases in their size. Ships rely on
ports and as such ports need to adapt in order to accommodate the changes that are occurring to the ships and their requirements. It is not a new phenomenon; the
evolution of ships has resulted in the changes to many ports over a number of decades (Robinson, 1970). One of the main changes in shipping due to technology has been
the ability to build larger ships that can carry more cargo, larger containers and more passengers, with larger and mega ships influencing the development and requirements of ports. The
development of mega-ships may be seen as creating an environment where there will be a clear delineation between the TEU larger mega-ships and the older smaller ships. Mega ships
may be defined as ships carrying more than 12,000 TEUs, making them the giants of the sea, and with the real limits on size not yet fully explored. It is
expected that the ports will continue to be an important source of economic activity and support the international trade and the economies of many countries. However with the emergence of
the mega ships the way this takes place will not be the same. Today there are ships able to carry 4,500 20 foot long containers, and with more than 4,500
containers on board the ships can be more than 1,100 feet long this ships, which can gain massive economies of scale, are likely to gain a high level of the
