of cinematography. In 1974 adaptation of Tennessee Williams classic play The Glass Menagerie, which was produced for television and directed by Anthony Harvey, features several extraordinary performances, one of
which is delivered by Sam Waterson as "Tom." As the introductory credits roll, the camera focuses on Tom, who is walking down a lonely street in winter. The perspective
shifts to a girl in white crossing the street, and then back to Toms reaction. Without saying a word, Waterson makes it clear with his expression, his eyes, the tilt
of his head and everything about his aspect that he has just had a glimpse of his past and he is not sure if the image of the girl was
real or simply a memory, a longing made manifest by the intense and painful love that is in his eyes. As he speaks his opening soliloquy, the audience soon learns
that the speaker had a sister named Laura, and all the other expository information necessary to understand Toms memories, but they already know the theme that makes up the heart
of the play, which is the fact that Toms continues to love his sister, miss her and long for a different past, as he pursues a different future from the
one destined for him by his mother, Amanda, who is brilliantly play in this adaptation by Katharine Hepburn. Similarly, Laurence Fishburne turns in a stellar performance as Othello in
