Young Man and Ulysses by James Joyce are two very different works. Portrait has a much more conventional structure than Ulysses, as it relates a coming-of-age narrative that features Stephen
Dedalus and the development of his cognitive perspective throughout his childhood and adolescence. Ulysses, on the other hand, while it continues the story of Stephens life, is almost unrecognizable as
a novel, as this stream of consciousness narrative offers readers very little in terms of chronological plot development. All of the episodes in Ulysses occur with in the course of
a single day, June 16, 1904, and are loosely adhere to the structure evident in Homers ancient Greek epic poem The Odyssey. In many ways, Ulysses can be understood as
a prose poem, as Joyce utilizes poetic language to conjure specific emotional states and convey images. While there certainly are stark differences between the two works, there are also similarities,
as both narratives feature the life of Stephen Dedalus as a principal character, display the characteristic features of Joyces stream-of-consciousness style and also illustrate his use of poetic devices and
imagery. Character development of Stephen Dedalus Portrait of the Artist begins with Stephens Irish childhood near the close of the nineteenth century, and charts the young mans development throughout adolescence
and his early adult years. From an early age, Stephens sensual nature is highly evident. Stephen notices that "His mother had a nicer smell than his father" and that "When
