be able to think critically and successfully problem solve. In todays ever-changing society, it is also crucial that students obtain the skills they need to be self-learners, as professionals are
now required to learn throughout their careers. Additionally, teachers face these challenges within the context of a culturally diverse student population. My eight-plus years working in the secondary school
system (grades 9 through 12) has afford me an acute awareness of what it means to be a teacher in todays society and what is required to meet these challenges.
I have observed classrooms in which the teacher achieved these goals, and also classrooms in which the teacher did not. The difference, in my opinion, between success and failure seemed
to hinge on the teachers instructional approach, rather than on the make-up of the class demographically. Teachers who engaged the students in the task of learning with hands-on activities and
research projects generated enthusiasm for learning, as this approach allowed the students to engage with the curriculum in a manner that suited their particular learning style, personal interests and
cultural background. In these classrooms, when a student encounters a problem, the teacher does not solve the problem, but rather aids the student in solving the problem. For
example, the student may have difficulty finding information on a topic, the teacher guides the student in an Internet search, showing the student how to search by keywords and also
advising the student on how to tell a reliable, scholarly source of information from the plethora of junk that also exists on the Internet. In so doing, teachers convey to
students not only information that they should learn, but they show them how to find this information. They help their students to become lifetime learners. There is an old saying
