cannot truly be independent. Written by a man, James, however, it still appears incredibly valid in terms of a feminist statement of the time. As such one wonders, perhaps, who James was and what inspired him to write this story about a woman and her struggles, as well as the struggles of various characters. The following paper examines the life and experiences of Henry James and discusses how his life influenced and inspired the writing of this particular novel. Portrait of a Lady and Henry James "Henry James was born in New York City in 1843...Jamess father, a prominent intellectual and social theorist, traveled a great deal to Geneva, Paris, and London, so Henry and his brother, William, accompanied him and virtually grew up in those locations as well" (SparkNotes). When he was a child he was considered to be quite shy and perhaps delicate in nature (SparkNotes). His brother William, who would become the famous American philosopher, often called Henry a sissy (SparkNotes). There was, apparently, not much about his early life, or even his adult life, that seemed to indicate any great adventures or influences. He was generally considered to be a very powerful observer, and having essentially grown up in Europe and America he was a man with a wealth of information which he could write about in relationship to people and cultures. One individual describes the adult life of James stating that his life was actually quite dull from an outsiders perspective. "He wrote in the morning, dictating to a typist, then got a little exercise in the afternoon (long walks and bicycling), then went to a party or out to dinner" (Plunket 258).
