within which the firm operates has changed significantly, but the firm has been able to adapt and evolve. Looking at then firm today the use of Porters five forces
analysis may be used to assess the firm within its environment. The five forces Porter identifies are the existing competitors, the threat
of new entrants, substitute products (or services), and the power of purchasers and suppliers (Mintzberg et al 2008). Porter does not see these external factors as working alone, they act
in relationship to each other. The first force is the influence of existing competitors or rivalry. The structure here was one of
existing dominance by Boeing, but with a high level of competition for Airbus. Rivalry between these two firms is high, as Airbus are increasing the challenge and in 2003 they
outsold Boeing for the first time (McAuley, 2003). In the large commercial airliner segment these are the two main firms, and both seek to compete with differentiation. Airbus has developed
a reputation for innovation led by the A300/A310 family of aircraft and the A320 family which had the trademark "fly by wire" technology installed (Esty, 2008).
The "fly by wire" technology was a major innovation where the heavy hydraulic circuits used to control the aircraft were replaced by electrical power circuits.
