ideologies. In 1992, for example, officials at Pennsylvania State University removed Francisco de Goyas masterpiece "The Nude Maja" from a classroom wall, after an English professor suggested that the
painting was offensive (Strossen 7). The controversies of the photographs of Maplethorpe have also caused considerable issues and have resulted in the banning of his work in some areas.
The fact that pornography claims have negatively impacted the world of art suggests that individuals have gone to far in attempting to stomp out pornographic representations. It
has been difficult in the midst of constantly changing media and an increase in pornographic businesses to determine exactly what pornography is and how it is distinguishable, in both a
legal and a philosophical sense, from obscenity. Former Justice Potter Stewart once stated: "I shall not today attempt further to define (obscenity); and perhaps I could never succeed
in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it" (Strossen 7). While some people consider pornography or the physical representations of human bodies and
genitalia, as freedom of expression or freedom of speech, many other people believe "pornography to be an evil in itself, regardless of its possible effects on others, and think that
its widespread use is symptomatic of a crisis of values in Western society" (Copp 15). In order to understand the basic elements of current arguments, it is imperative to
